Sero showcase
Project:

CAPITAL (Curriculum and Pedagogy in Technology Assisted Learning)

CAPITAL
Client:

BECTA

Background:

CAPITAL is one of three parallel research projects commissioned by Becta to support the development of the Harnessing Technology strategy between 2008 and 2011. The other two strands cover learner use of technology outside formal education, and business models for deployment of technology by educational institutions.

CAPITAL is being undertaken by Sero jointly with a University of Nottingham team  from their Learning Sciences Research Institute and Teaching and Leadership Research Centre, led by Professor Mike Sharples as Research Director for the project. The aim of the project is to carry out research into the future of learning and teaching with technology, including trends, disruptions and new modes of learning. It covers all education sectors and a broad range of topics such as curriculum and assessment; the redesign of teaching approaches; formal and informal learning; personalisation and differentiation.  As well as expert-led horizon scans on these topics, the wider community is involved through reference group sessions, interviews, sandpit events, case studies and a small number of action research projects.
Our contribution:

David Kay acts as Project Director and Ian Chowcat as Project Manager, with 10 other staff and Associates involved in aspects of the research.

Our approach:

The first year of the project is structured into three iterative cycles, one per term, focused on an integrated programme of research activities, analysis of intelligence, and peer review.  We aim to identify the dominant directions of technology in our current educational system, the range and scope of identified innovations and the opportunities to improve educational and learning impacts given the anticipated evolution of technologies over the next 3-5 years. The second and third years will build on and test out the initial findings and expand the research into new areas.
