David Kay – Strategic Development Director
Formerly director of a technology company in the education sector with over 25 years of IT sector experience, David has consulted nationally and internationally on technology supported learning and libraries, as well as digital curriculum and awards. A trained and experienced teacher, David also leads Sero’s work on enterprise in education.

Liz Wallis - Managing Director
A marketing specialist and former eLearning and MIS company director, Liz trained as a linguist and primary school teacher before embarking on a career in the IT sector. Liz directs the Sero operation and quality assures all programmes, as well as consulting directly on regional and national programmes.


Ali Shankland – Networks and Engagement Manager
Ali Shankland has a background in client relationship and project management built up over 15 years in the creative industries and subsequently in the business support sector. Ali’s work for Sero has involved partner engagement and sales support for ICT Active, network development for Digital 20/200 and event management for the Sheffield schools and colleges enterprise programme.

Barbara Tabbiner – Senior Consultant
A former lecturer and curriculum manager specialising in ICT, Barbara has a strong background in leading staff development in Further Education as well as considerable teaching, curriculum development and management experience.

Barry Phillips – Senior Consultant
Formerly at the DfES e-Learning Strategy Unit before secondment to Sheffield City Council as Strategic e-Learning Manager, Barry is a specialist in new and emerging technologies for learning, teaching and social inclusion, including work on overseas policy development.

Brigidin Crowther – Head of Creativity
A former Advisory Teacher for multimedia performing arts, Brigidin has worked in broadcasting, international marketing and film making, and prior to joining Sero led the Sheffield ‘Developing Creativity’ project offering young people pathways into the creative industries.

Giles Pepler – Senior Consultant
A former Headteacher of an urban comprehensive and Principal of three colleges, Giles has consulted for KPMG as well as independently.  His main areas of expertise are management and governance, strategy development, curriculum design and financial planning. Giles also has a strong interest in lifelong learning and the standing of Modern Foreign Languages.

Helen Harrop – Consultant and Senior Researcher
After IT posts with Prudential, Helen joined the HE Academy in 2005, where she produced reports on barriers to participation, student retention and employability and coordinated delivery of the web portal pilot project. A post with Simple Usability followed before Helen joined Sero in 2009 as a Senior Researcher working on projects for Becta, JISC and the Open University.

Iain Milner – Accounts Administrator
A Sage Accounts trained finance officer, Iain is the anchor person for Sero’s financial and administrative operations.

Dr Ian Chowcat – Head of Learning Innovation
Formerly at the National College of School Leadership then Director of the South Yorkshire e-Learning Programme, Ian has tutored a Masters Philosophy course for the Open University and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Kim Balmer – Researcher
An experienced primary school teacher with a degree in Psychology, a MSc in Social Research Methods and a Cert HE in Intercultural Studies with expertise in working with disadvantaged learners and those typically recognised as ‘hard to reach’.

Linda Barton – Operations Manager
A former customer services and business manager in the IT industry and subsequently for an international training and development company, Linda specialises in managing teams, operations and events. Linda is the Operations Manager for our ict active work.

Nick Jeans
An experienced basic skills teacher, teacher trainer and e-learning mentor, Nick is a member of JISC’s Learning and Teaching Practice Experts Group and has worked for the LSDA (now LSN) on their 'ELNET' project and was involved in the Open-Source portfolio Initiative piloting e-portfolios. Prior to joining Sero, Nick headed up the Content Development Team in the South Yorkshire eLearning Programme working with teachers to produce and use e-learning in all subjects.

Prof Paul Bacsich – Senior Consultant
Learning technology specialist with a background in e-learning benchmarking, change management, technology, policy and quality issues; active in UK and EU e-learning circles. Currently Visiting Professor at Middlesex University.

Peter Rowe – Project Manager
Prince2 accredited project manager specialising in ICT projects, with a particular interest in inclusion.

Philippe Ugochukwu – Project Officer
With a background in Social Sciences, Philippe is Sero’s principal researcher on our benchmarking activity. A musician and social entrepreneur, Philippe also supports our work in developing creativity and enterprise in school and post-16 settings.
